Russia’s defense industry has completed tests of a new flying command center capable of maintaining full control over the country’s armed forces in the event of a global disaster or nuclear war. Russia and the US are the only two nations to possess a command center of this kind.
The airborne strategic command center aboard an Ilyushin Il-80 aircraft, a modification of the Il-86 wide-body jet airliner, has successfully completed testing and will be ready for operations by the end of 2015, Russia’s United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (UIMC) said.
The operational deployment of the airborne center is indispensable in situations when there is an absence of ground infrastructure, and in conditions where communications from ground facilities have been disrupted.
The new generation airborne command post has improved survivability, functionality and reliability, and the  electronics on board have reduced mass-dimensional characteristics and power consumption, its producer claims.
The first generation of Russian airborne strategic command centers was also based on Ilyushin Il-80 aircraft. Altogether, 4 command posts were manufactured - all of which are still in service.
The Il-80 carries on board senior generals, an operational team of staff officers, and a crew of technicians who maintain the aircraft’s special equipment.
The technical capabilities of the airborne command unit enable it to mastermind and distribute tasks to ground forces, Navy, aerospace forces and strategic missile forces.
Aleksandr Komyakov, director general of the ‘Polet’ research and production enterprise which designed the equipment for the command center, told TASS in August that the Il-80’s main advantage was its “invincibility.”
“While [command] installations with known ground positions could be eliminated, an airborne command post is a target hard to disable because it shifts continuously. The Americans call this type of aircraft “doomsday planes,” Komyakov explained.
The primary task of “doomsday” planes is “establishing [communications] networks in extremely unfavorable circumstances, with ground infrastructure missing or destroyed,” Komyakov said.
The UIMC is already conducting design engineering works for construction of a strategic airborne command center of the next generation, although a timeframe for the project has not been publicly specified.

Moscow's missile defense system can protect the city against any kind of ballistic missile, according to Colonel Andrei Cheburin, commander of the missile defense division of the 1st Air Defense Army of the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces.

Russian Aerospace Forces to Receive Advanced Missile Defenses
"Right now it is the only system in the world capable of intercepting any kind of ballistic missile coming from any direction, including missiles specifically designed to bypass missile defense systems," Cheburin revealed in a Monday interview with Russian media.
He also added that the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces are about to upgrade the Moscow missile defense facilities.
"The Moscow missile defense system is a complex automated network which includes both information and weapon systems. The missile defense forces under my command are directly responsible for the combat readiness of the entire system," he said.
The colonel also mentioned that the missile defense elements protecting the Russian capital are directly linked to the ballistic missile early warning and space monitoring systems.

Je, vodovodne cijevi S400 profila. Do sredine iduće godine ruska vojska dobija još 6 kompletnih S400 sistema. :D

Washington Left in the Dust: Russia Flies Strategic Space Warfare Missile

Moscow carried out the first successful flight test of its new anti-satellite missile last month, becoming just the second nation to arm its military with space warfare weapons.
Russia's direct ascent anti-satellite missile, known as Nudol, was successfully tested on November 18, according to defense officials familiar with reports of the test. It was the first successful test in three attempts, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Russia now joins China as the only nations with strategic space warfare weapons. In October, China conducted a flight test of its anti-satellite missile, the Dong Neng-3 direct ascent missile.
Analysts say anti-satellite missiles could cripple US intelligence, navigation, and communications capabilities that are critical for both military operations and civilian infrastructure.
The Russian test is a concern for Washington, Representative Mike Pompeo, a Kansas Republican, told the paper.
"As President Obama cuts our defense budget and seeks to ally with Putin, the Russians continue to develop their technological abilities to weaponize space and to take out our national technical means – kinetically and through cyber," said Pompeo, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
"We can foolishly turn a blind eye to these developments, or acknowledge this threat and develop our own capabilities to ensure that our satellites – military and commercial – are not susceptible to attack or blackmail."
Former Pentagon official Mark Schneider said the Russian test highlights the failure of the United States to prepare for space warfare.
"There is an enormous asymmetry in play regarding space weapons," said Schneider, now with the National Institute for Public Policy.
"For decades the Congress has prevented the US from putting weapons in space and even developing a ground-based ASAT capability," Schneider said. "There is no such constraint upon the Russians and Russia violates arms control treaties when this is in their interest to do so and they find ample opportunity to do this."
A February 2015 unclassified Defense Intelligence Agency report to the Congress stated that "Chinese and Russian military leaders understand the unique information advantages afforded by space systems and are developing capabilities to deny US use of space in the event of a conflict," Schneider added.

Russian scientists have developed a unique system for the transmission of electricity between spacecraft using lasers and photoelectric converters, according to the Russian daily Izvestia.

The Federal Space Agency Roscosmos plans to perform a unique experiment where it hopes to transmit energy wirelessly in space, RIA Novosti quoted the Russian newspaper Izvestia as saying.
The new technology, which will use a space laser, may be of use to sophisticated satellites and military space vehicles, the newspaper said, adding that the experiment is being prepared by experts from the Rocket and Space Corporation Energia, according to Izvestia.
Scientists plan to transmit energy from the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS) to the cargo ship Progress across 1.5 kilometers of space using a laser beam.
"Several leading Russian laboratories are taking part in the project, and we already have photoelectric converter receivers which are about 60 percent efficient," Energia spokesman Vyacheslav Tugaenko said.
According to him, a special track for testing the guidance system of the laser has already been prepared by Energia researchers.

They added that the ability to transfer power from one spacecraft to the other opens up new horizons in space exploration.
The idea of remotely "refueling" satellites in orbit has been hypothesized by scientists since the middle of the last century.
According to Andrey Ionin, a member of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics, such a refueling will be necessary to supply fuel to state-of-the-art satellites and military vehicles.
